How To Properly Maintain Your Central Air Conditioning Unit

Blog

If you would like to make sure that your central air conditioning unit runs as well as it can for as long as it can, you will want to take the proper steps to maintain it. Do not make the mistake of assuming that it is going to be too much work. It will only take a little bit of time and will surely save you from a lot of frustration and lost money in the future.

Keep The Freon Filled

You do not want to accidentally cause your air conditioning unit to run without enough Freon in it. Doing so could cause multiple parts within the unit to begin to break down. If you can, check the Freon level on your own. If you are not able to do this, it would be a good idea to have an HVAC specialist come check it for you about once a year. This should be done prior to turning the unit on for the summer months.

Keep The Debris Away

It is vital to make sure that you are keeping debris away from the central air conditioning unit. You do not want any old leaves or small twigs making their way inside of it or blocking the air filter or drain hose. Once a week, brush off the top and sides of the unit with a broom. Also, make sure that there are not any trees with low hanging branches right next to the unit. If there are any shrubs next to it, you will want to keep those trimmed back and out of the way.

Keep It Covered In The Winter

Too many people make the mistake of not covering their central air conditioning unit during the winter months. While it is true, the air conditioner may still work the following year when it is left uncovered, its seasons are limited. Most likely, it is not going to run as well or last as long as it would if you covered it to protect it from the snow and ice. You can purchase a special cover that was made specifically for central air units or you can simply lay a large tarp over it. Just make sure that you are holding the tarp in place by placing some stones or bricks along the bottom of the tarp.

Making use of those maintenance tips, along with any others that you might find in the owner's manual or that are suggested to you by your trusted HVAC technician, you will be able to keep your central air unit in tip top shape.
